 BEAM                         BEAM                         BOX                             BOX

(Hint: What you do in the sport of boxing ?)

ANSWER: box.

There are many words in the English language that are spelled the same or sound the same but have different meanings.   These words are called homonyms.  We have these words because they make our language more rich and diverse, like our cultures and people in America.

A beam can be a ray of light, like a moonbeam, sunbeam or high beam, or a beam used for balancing in gymnastics.  A box can be something for packaging things, and to box is a sport where people fight with boxing gloves by punching and using defense.  The analogy works because both pairs of words are homonyms.  Homonyms that are spelled the same are called homographs.

CLEATS

HINT: in what sport do players use cleats?

ANSWER: soccer.

soccer

Even though it may not seem so, ballerinas and soccer players are very similar.  Both dancing and playing soccer require a lot of strength.  You also need special shoes for both sports.  Soccer players wear a special type of shoe called a cleat.  Cleats are like tennis shoes with little spikes under them.  Ballet dancers wear a special type of shoe called a pointe shoe.  Pointe shoes help dancers balance on their toes.

Have you ever worn cleats or pointe shoes?

paint horse

Answer: PAINT horse.

The spots on an Appaloosa have a wide range of colors and patterns.  In contrast, Paint horses usually have dark patches with a white background.

Appaloosas and Paints are alike because both are used for Western riding, and sometimes they are shown in competition for prizes if they are beautiful.  Both breeds are naturally good at herding cattle and other farm animals.  They both are used for barrel racing, roping cattle, walking in parades and bronco riding.

What is your favorite sport?
